Walter & Prince Receive AGC of California's Vickie Schlechter Award

Walter & Prince was awarded the Vicki Schlechter Associate of the Year award for 2008 at the Associated General Contractors of California's safety awards luncheon, held during its general conference in Monterey last week.
We are pleased, to say the least, to receive this award from those we work with toward realizing the twin goals of construction safety and profitability. We are also re-energized to be in the ranks of those who have received this award in the past, including Rick Church, Margarie Boone, Mark Aniello, Kevin Bland and, of course, Vickie Schlechter.
There are very few places one can go to learn safety or the law of safety. So when we joined the AGC's Safety & Health Council ten years ago it was with intention to learn, to give back to the industry and, perhaps, to gain some business. In that order. What we found out quickly was that AGC members "get it" about safety. Their problems with Cal/OSHA, when they occur, are not systemic or cultural - they are episodic. As one of the awards recipients put it, safety is not a priority with his company, it is a value: Priorities change; values endure.
That attitude, typical of the AGC members with whom we have worked, has kept us coming back year in, year out. To receive this honor from our peers in safety is an honor indeed.
We are doubly honored to share the 2008 Associate of the Year award with Don Bradway, Safety Manager for Monarch-Kneis Insurance Services of San Francisco. We first met Don after he became the safety director for C. C. Meyers and our acquaintanceship developed into collaboration and then friendship. Don has always impressed us with his willingness to share his knowledge and his enthusiastic support for professionals and the profession of safety. He is one of the best.
